First Meditation for the Holy Week
by Rev Mario Schoenmaker
In his last Easter, and over three nights, Rev Mario led those present into the spiritual mood of Holy Week. Using the passion story from the Gospel of St Matthew he contemplated, in profoundly inspirational talks, the implications of the Easter event for the world and for each of us. This is the first of those meditations.

Speaking from his own spiritual experience and knowledge Rev Mario describes how the Lord’s Supper was an ancient initiation rite. He said that we have lost the tremendous significance, power and glory of the original Mass. Today it has become a custom, a normal thing to participate in. Yet in those early days, even before the time of Christ, the initiation rite into the mastership of occultism was done with the breaking of bread and drinking of wine. Originally the Lord’s Supper was only for those who were initiated. It was not for the common folk.
He speaks about the mystery and power of the bread and wine, the act of consecration and the effect on our etheric and astral. He connects this with being able to love with the mind and think with the heart and the development of a new spiritual organ – the inner chalice. If you wish to fulfil the longing portrayed in the song we sing each Easter “Open my eyes to see victory in Christ for me. Lord, make Calvary real to me”, this reflection and the two which follow will help you to enter more deeply into the greater meaning of the Mysteries of Golgotha.
