The Lumina of Watercolour

The watercolour medium allows the white of the paper to shine through the transparent coloured pigment giving the painting a luminous quality. Thus the word ‘lumina’ is in the title given to this group of paintings.
The use of water also brings some unpredictability to the painting process. The painter can at times feel involved in the elemental and natural life of the subject.
Another aspect, which is common to most painting media, is colour. Getting to know the individual soul nature of a colour and how it relates to and mixes with other colours is an ongoing enjoyment.
I have had various watercolour teachers. The painting of ‘The Magi’ for example, shows the influence of ‘veil’ painting. This method involves placing one colour wash over another until the build up of many layers of transparent washes creates an ethereal quality. Other paintings show the influence of teachers from a group of Melbourne painters known for their ‘tonal impressionism’ style. Examples of this latter influence can be seen in ‘Light and Shade’, ‘Tranquil Bay’ and ‘Beyond the Valley’.
I hope you enjoy these watercolour paintings (below).
