A guided meditation on Christ’s journey to the cross
by Rev Mario Schoenmaker
Walk with the Christ to the cross. Experience his condemnation, his taking up of the cross, his meeting with his mother and the women of Jerusalem as he walks through the streets; his falling under the weight of the cross, being helped by Simon of Cyrene, his arrival on Mt Calvary, his stripping and being nailed to the cross.

Around the walls of all Catholic churches you will find fourteen pictures depicting the Via Dolorosa, the way of suffering which Christ walked on his way to Calvary. Each Good Friday the priest leads a procession from one picture to another and before each “station” they say a prayer and have a time of quiet meditation.
In this meditation led by Rev Mario, you create your own pictures. This is a journey in spirit, imagination and feeling. The song that is sung before each station captures the intention of this service: Lord, make Calvary real to me Lord, make Calvary real to me Open my eyes to see victory in Christ for me Lord, make Calvary real to me. At each station we affirm our love for Christ and his act of redemption. Then Rev Mario describes the events of that station and what they signify on an inner level. This is followed by a prayer in which we confess our failures and renew our commitment to unify ourselves with Christ. The willingness to embark on this journey down the Via Dolorosa is the willingness to be initiated into the mysteries of the Christ. Keywords Metaphysical, Easter, Initiation, Devotional. |
