Knowing the Self as One
by Antoinette Schoenmaker
To bring a greater alignment between our spiritual life and our physical life, our values and our actions, is at the heart of the work of integration. It is to make use of all of ourselves purposefully, so we may be whole, harmonious beings, knowing the Self as One.

We often experience a disconnect between our ideals and values and our actions. We criticize ourselves, and so we criticize others. We cannot see how it is all working together for good. We have strange ideas of perfection. The work of integration is about bringing these disparate and discordant parts of ourselves into a working relationship, where all parts of the puzzle have their place. ‘That nothing may be lost’ but everything within us is made useful in the fulfilling of our purpose for coming to this earth. This work to bring things together and penetrate the ordinary with a divine knowledge and power, is to know the sacred in each moment.
We see this pictured in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ who was ‘reconciling the world unto himself’ and opening once more the flow of communication and love between the heavens and the earth. He did not disdain earthly life or certain sections of society. Rather he proclaimed that God loved the world, and he used the most ordinary elements of life, the bread and the wine, to be the conveyers of remembrance of his presence and divine power.
The work of integration is a work that is carried on day by day as we go about our seemingly ordinary lives. And yet it is also a big work, an evolutionary work. We see it going on through the ages, we see it now with the coming together of different cultures and in the recognition of a diversity of lifestyles. The work of integration has an application in every aspect of our lives.
Using the teachings of Rev Mario Schoenmaker, this book was written as a guide and inspiration for this focus. There are reflections on different aspects of this work to know the Self as One:
