Rev Heather Tan’s address
from Mystical Cosmic Mass (via Zoom)
5 May 2024
The Mystical Interval is that period after Easter in which we take in the new life that Christ has given and are aware of the presence of the risen Christ and his appearance to those who love him. The descriptions given by the four Gospel writers of the encounters of the followers of Jesus with the Risen Christ range from the rather outwardly dramatic accounts of Matthew through to the much deeper inner experience of his risen presence within us always.
Luke’s Gospel, the one of the present age, focuses on a greater inward movement of the experience of the Risen Christ in his account of Cleopas and is companion with Him on the road to Emmaus, and their eventual recognition of him and the experience of their “hearts burning within them”. This brings to the fore the “experience” of partaking in the bread and wine in “remembrance” of him.
In these times in which we live, this account brings to the fore our need to more consciously enter into life, aware of his presence in us and with us and also that when we partake of the bread and wine in full consciousness we are able tap into the eternal Mystic Mass and work towards the time when we can become one with Him.
It is then that we can say: “Do not our hearts burn within us?”.
