The spiritual festival of Christmas, festival of true light, is a celebration and reconnecting with the first Christmas when the Word became flesh, shining light within this earth. More than this, it is an opportunity and an empowerment for us to awaken evermore fully to our nature as offspring of the light; to embrace our responsibility to shine the light of Christ into the dark places in our world and in human nature and experience.
It is helpful to contemplate darkness, not as absence (i.e. absence of light), rather as a realm of potentiality; a place of mystery, of fullness from which grace can flow. The indigo darkness of the midnight sky carries within it all the potential, hope and promise to be revealed and manifest in the new dawn.
Those who are the light of the world, as Christ was and is, radiate both truth and love. They are motivated by love – for Christ and for the human soul. Such people are enablers, as light is an enabler. By the light of a candle we are able to read, to write, to be active. To be that candle, that light, for someone else, is often to be as still and subtle as the light from a candle; as subtle as incense in the air which somehow changes the atmosphere to one in which spirits can rise.
