Rev Robert John's address from the Cosmic Mass
Sunday, 2 October, 2022
Robert speaks about the work of enabling hope in an increasing secular society – the beingness and consciousness, as well and the language and forms, that assist this work. He draws on conversations, addresses, songs, readings and prayers from Priest Conclave 2022 “A Priest in a Secular World”.
We have our life and being in this world because the spirit has been breathed into us, into all creation. And so as was noted in one of our Conclave sessions, it is more truthful to identify our society, rather than the world, as secular. In fact, the world, all creation is sacred because the spirit has been breathed into it by God. The society in which we live, though, is increasingly secular … forgetful of our origins and essential beingness in spirit, perhaps even rejecting of this truth.
Part of our mission and ministry as members of this spiritual community is to re-orient awareness and understanding from the material, the external, to the spiritual, the spirit within. Christ in us, our hope of glory!
And as Christ Jesus did in his use of parables, to relate to and communicate with people where they are at about that in which they are presently engaged – pointing their attention, though, to a greater, more complete reality.
Our task, each of us, is to “stand as a rock, immoveable” in the uncertainty, the upheavals, the conflicts that surround us. To stand solid in our experience and understanding of spiritual truth; yet flexible and adaptable in the language and forms we utilise to communicate this.
It is that ‘tree of life’ growing up within our being, the fruit of our experience of hope, that will perhaps be the greatest hope we can offer to the world. Christ in us: hope of glory – in the midst of a fractured world and fractured people, bringing balance and unity, shining light in the darkness.
