Song by Colleen Corridan
Serene Light,
Shining in the ground of my being,
draw me to yourself.
Draw me past the snares of the senses,
out of the mazes of the mind.
Free me from symbols, from words,
that I may discover the Signified,
the Word unspoken,
in the darkness
which veils the ground of my being.
These words were written by an Australian mystic, Phyllis V. Campbell (1892-1974). They were published in a collection called The Mystical Poems of Phyllis V. Campbell in 1989.
There is a universality to these words, which is perhaps why this prayer is used in so many different spiritual traditions as a contemplative prayer. It is also known as a Byzantine prayer.
It is a call to stillness and surrender, a plea to come to the essential. It is the prayer that begins our Holy Communion service.

Serene Light,
Shining in the ground of my being, draw me to yourself. Draw me past the snares of the senses, out of the mazes of the mind. Free me from symbols, from words, that I may discover the Signified, the Word unspoken, in the darkness which veils the ground of my being. Colleen has set these words to a chant-like melody which assists in the stilling and centering of self. Play this song as a preparation for entering into contemplative prayer, meditation or holy communion. You can sing along to this recording or simply listen to it.
