Letting the light of Christ shine into the darkness of this world and the next – through your thoughts, your love, your life, your prayers, your words, your actions – is an act of will. It begins by seeing yourself with something to give, no matter how small or humble. It involves working with the light, not with the darkness.

You are the light of the world, Christ said to us. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14)
We often say Christ has no eyes but our eyes, no lips but our lips, no hands but our hands, so how is the light of Christ to shine in this world other than through our eyes, our hands, our speech? But it takes our willingness and cooperation for this to happen. We do this through being conscious of the Christ life that is in us and what is flowing from us moment by moment and of the potential of each moment and each meeting for the life, the light and the love of Christ to be experienced and expressed. Consciousness is the very essence of light. When we shine our light, the darkness disappears. The expression ‘to shine’ is often connected with really displaying our talents and gifts. Realise the areas where you can contribute and bring life and light. And remember that it is the Christ himself, the cosmic Christ, the mystic Christ, who is igniting something within us: the light of his love. Light has created our organs of seeing – both physically and spiritually. Light enables us to see and to understand, sometimes painfully so. Light is the substance of our real bodies. In learning to work with the light, to bear the light, we are preparing ourselves for the future when we will dwell in the everlasting light. Stand as light-bearers: shining into the darkness the light that brings understanding, new possibilities and life. Keywords Year of, 2013, Light |
