Creativity and spontaneityAn excerpt from an article in Living Metaphysics: A practical spiritual guide, 'Play as Re-creation'.
ASSOCIATED with recreation and play is spontaneity. Spontaneity comes from the divine spark within us. Through it we develop confidence and release energy. It involves the ability to be flexible, to make new responses in old situations and to respond to new situations. In their drama book Improvisation, Hodgson and Richards write this about improvising or spontaneity in daily life: “There is a further aspect of improvising we meet in day-to-day living: we are continually having to adjust to whatever happens around us. The more unexpected the happening, the more spontaneous and frank the response is likely to be. Because people are less predictable than things, we are more often called upon to adjust to others in a way we cannot easily plan. If we are open and receptive, we can make discoveries about ourselves and others from these moments. If we are less receptive, the tendency will be to reproduce what we consider to be socially acceptable responses which become standardised and stereotyped.” Love and creativity are linked together. Both have their source in spirit. In terms of relationships, a loving relationship allows the other to simply be. A creative relationship allows the other to be different in the future. We are constantly changing and growing, and in our relationships we need to be able to allow new things to unfold in another person, and new discoveries be made by us about them. If you have a loving relationship with your own life, then you are competent at receiving pleasure and nourishment from that life; you can receive pleasure and give it by being delightful. It is like the energy of a young child. If the child is feeling nourished, loved and included in the family group then that child will be full of joy and delight, but if it feels undernourished and neglected then the emotions turn to fear and anger and sadness. The process of creativity works in the following way.
Spontaneity is necessary in order to express love in a creative way. If we want to respond to an old situation in a new way, or to respond to a new situation in an adequate way, then we need to become aware of the ways in which we can express our spontaneity.
