Vessel for the Living Spirit of Christ
by Antoinette Schoenmaker
The chalice is the sacred vessel which holds the wine during the Mass. It is the means by which we can take into ourselves the spirit of Christ. To learn to see ourselves as this vessel, as the means by which the living spirit can be poured into the world around us, is the focus of this book.

THE CHALICE is a strong symbol, a serene presence, silent yet speaking. In this time of tumult and change, the strength, peacefulness and constancy it represents, and the forgiveness and renewal of life it makes available seems more needed than ever. We are called upon to hold up this cup of salvation, and remind the world around us of the presence of spirit, and the importance of our spiritual life.
The chalice is a sacred vessel, set aside from a common use to a sacred use. And so it is with those who have made vows and promises to God. They have been set aside for sacred service and a holy purpose. To take this in, to know the implications for ourselves as the dispensers of the mysteries in this day and age, is more important than ever. The chalice engenders many memories, responses and reflections within us. It brings forward times of old, it brings forward the hidden treasure we carry within us now. It speaks of what we must be – as individuals and as a spiritual community. The chalice speaks to us of many things: it is an image of openness to the heavens. It is able to contain and hold what it receives. In the cup the contents are consecrated and transformed. It speaks of our inner work and of being able to pour out, to flow, to give of the contents of our souls. It speaks also of the necessity of cleansing and emptiness at times, and of being veiled at other times. There are many aspects to consider in taking on the identity of being a sacred vessel. This book examines some of the aspects the chalice puts before us: THE INNER FORM OF THE CHALICE Open to the Heavens The Peaceful Heart The Connection between Head and Heart A Vessel of Transformation THE QUALITIES OF THE CHALICE An Open Heart The Tumult and Challenge of our Present Time What Shines out? The Mysteries Revealed Balanced between Heaven and Earth Peaceful and Accepting Strength of Character The Spirit Poured into You To Proclaim and Pour Out THE CONTAINER AND THE CONTENTS The Established Vessel of the Soul Filled with the Spirit TO BE THE CHALICE A New and Intimate Way What Must Be Set Aside What Must Be Taken Up To Bring the Presence of Christ CARE FOR THIS VESSEL Taking on Spiritual Disciplines and Practices The Role of Gratitude Knowing We Are Being Shaped and Refined Accepting the Cleansing of Karma THOSE WHO CAN LIFT UP THE CUP OF SALVATION The Awareness behind our Vows Set Apart for a Holy Purpose Pre-Destined to Present Christ THE VESSEL OF THE BROTHERHOOD Creating an Etheric Form The Re-Membering of Christ Strengthening our Connections A Brotherhood formed by Spirit for the Spirit THE GREAT NEED FOR THE VESSEL NOW The need for inner strength, for forgiveness and release, for renewal of life energies – this is clear when you walk down any street in any city. There is a need for the power and re-assurance the chalice holds. There is a need for us to bring its saving, wholemaking force wherever we are placed. We pray this booklet will be a great encouragement in this very important task that is being called for now.
