Christ Jesus is described as the “exalted servant” in the Palm Sunday lenten meditation. But he is not the only servant in the Palm Sunday story. Robert focuses on the other servant – the donkey, who carries Christ to the realisation of his destiny and fulfilment of his purpose.
In both the Christmas and Easter gospel accounts, the donkey plays a significant role in these bookend moments in the incarnation of Christ:
- at Christmas, a donkey carries the unborn babe to its birthplace, and then the newborn child to safety in Egypt; and
- at Easter, Christ is carried by a donkey into Jerusalem to meet his destiny in the Golgotha event.
This is a reflection on how we may better related to our ‘inner donkey’ in a more collegial and companionable way.
