Christmas Eve 2024
Arise, shine; your light has come!
Lift up your eyes round about, and see …
Then you shall see and be radiant,
your heart shall be enlarged and rejoice.
— Isaiah 60:1,4,5
Christ was sung into incarnation with the powerful invocation we know as the Prologue to John’s Gospel. And we know, from esoteric teaching, that the great initiates of old sat in darkness awaiting the revelation of this light, the shining of the midnight sun in the numinous darkness of the cosmos … a darkness full and ripe with the life of divinity ready to birth into our our world, into our consciousness and being.
All too often, it seems, we see ourselves with them, those initiates of old. Sitting there surrounded in darkness. Waiting. Hoping. Praying. Wondering – if, when the light might come.
But that is not our place, not our task. We are not in darkness, even though we may at times feel like we are. That first Christmas brought the light of Christ into the world. The light remains, abiding with us. It is here. It shines. The glory of the heavens shines all around us!
The question is not whether the light is here; it is! The question is whether we can see this light and make it our own.
The Christmas story is full of inspiration for us as we learn to search out and perceive the light shining in the darkness.
